The Melting, the CONNEXT 2019-pitched project which is to become the directorial debut of actress Veerle Baetens (The Broken Circle Breakdown), is selected for the Berlinale Co-Production Market. Producer is Bart Van Langendonck of Savage Film (Bullhead, Patrick). Also selected for the Market’s TV series section is the cross-continental thriller series Capturing Big Mouth, scripted by European Film Award-winning director Hans Van Nuffel (Oxygen) and to be produced by De Mensen.

Based on Lize Spit’s bestselling debut novel, The Melting is the story of a young woman revisiting her past with a mysterious block of ice in the boot of her car. In addition to making her directorial debut, celebrated Flemish actress Veerle Baetens also wrote the script. “The Melting is an absolutely brilliant book,” she said at last year’s CONNEXT. “It grabbed me by the throat from page one. This is an incredible opportunity and I am eternally grateful to Lize for putting her trust in me.” The film is expected to go in production before the end of Summer.

De Mensen (Undercover, Hotel Beau Séjour) teams up with Reel One Entertainment on a new cross-continental thriller series, Capturing Big Mouth. It chronicles the unlikely rise and eventual fall of the infamous Somali pirates, based on the true story of Mohammad Abdi Hassan. In the series’ fictionalised version, Belgian counterterrorism officer Peter Van Osselaer and British-Somali former MI6 agent Naomi Abdallah join forces to chase down the pirate leader ‘Big Mouth’, who always manages to keep one step ahead of the authorities.

Writers of the Belgian-UK co-production are Hans Van Nuffel (who won the Discovery European Film Award with Oxygen) and Ahsan Naeem.
