Eva Cools’ feature debut Cleo won three awards at Rome’s Alice in the City programme. As well as the Alice My Movies Award for Best Debut, the film also grabbed the TimVision Award while lead actress Anna Franziska Jäger took home the Rising Star Award. The film’s next outing is the Tallinn Film Festival.
Jäger plays the role of 17-year-old Cleo who survives a hit and run accident in which both her parents lost their lives. Her grandmother tries to offer Cleo and her brother a safe home, but she ends up bearing the brunt of a rebellious teenager. Cleo seeks comfort in playing the piano and the music of Rachmaninov, but also in the company of the older, mysterious Leos…
Also starring Roy Aernouts, Yolande Moreau, Natali Broods (Tabula rasa) and Martha Canga Antonio (Black), the film is scripted by Cools. Producers are Annemie Degryse and Jan De Clercq for Lunanime. BE For Films is representing the film internationally.
Following its premiere at Film Fest Gent, Cleo will hit Belgian cinemas on 27 November.
